Products Needed for the First Twelve Months

Shopping list for first time parents

It can be hard to remember everything needed for you and your child for the first twelve months and more.
Hopefully this list will help you with our recommended purchases.

For Sleeping and Changing:

  • Moses Basket or Crib plus mattress
  • Cot or Cot bed plus mattress
  • Changing Mat
  • Changing table with drawers
  • Changer for top of cot (optional)
  • Moses Basket sheets – 4. (these can also be used for the pram)
  • Cot sheets – 4.
  • Baby quilt, bumper, pillow (NB: only to be used after the child is 2 years old)
  • Curtains (blackout)
  • Cellular blankets
  • Grow-Bags 2.  0 – 6 months
  • Changing bag (plenty of shops sell them)

For Baby:

  • Newborn Nappies – Pampers© or Huggies©  nappies – 3 – 4 packs
  • Sensitive baby wipes
  • Nappy bags/sacks
  • Milton©
  • Sterilising tablets & bags (handy for travel – optional)
  • Fairy© Non bio Washing powder
  • Anti-Bacterial Spray
  • Anti-Bacterial Hand wash
  • Baby sponge
  • Cotton wool – large roll
  • Baby shampoo/Baby Bath – Johnsons & Johnsons© /Natural products
  • Sudocream/Vaseline/Nappy Rash Cream (Bepathen)
  • Calpol © or Children’s Nurofen©
  • Bonjela©, Calgel ©& Teetha© (Herbal remedy)
  • Olive oil (in case of cradle cap or dry skin)
  • Baby massage oil
  • Baby Formula – (If not breast feeding)

Clothes for Baby

  • Bibs with Velcro fastenings
  • Baby grows x 12 New-born and 0-3 months
  • Baby vests x 12 New-born and 0-3 months
  • Cardigans – 2
  • Hat and mitts – 2
  • Hair brush baby kit
  • Baby’s Laundry Basket
  • Baby towels x 3
  • Fleece blanket – 1  (for outdoor)
  • Other blankets – 4 (cotton)
  • All in one suit or fleece outfit – 2
  • Small baskets for storing nappies, clothes

Shopping list for first time parents

For Mother:

  • Large Maternity Pads – 2 pack
  • Breast pads – 2 packets
  • Breast feeding Bras
  • Breastfeeding pump (optional to rent)
  • Changing Bag

For Later Stages

  • Weaning – beakers, bowls, and spoons
  • Bath seat
  • Bath toys
  • Travel Cot/Playpen – optional as a present (from 12 weeks onwards)
  • Easy view mirror (teddy bear with mirror)
  • Fresh food feeder
  • “Bumbo”© floor seat/chair – comes in a variety of colors used from 5 months onwards
  • High Chairs – needed from 5 months upwards.

Equipment for Baby 0 – 6 months

  • Room Thermometer
  • Baby bath and stand or Baby bath mould
  • Top and Tail bowl
  • Baby First Aid kit including nail clippers
  • Digital Ear Thermometer
  • Sterilizer plus bottles (9oz bottles)
  • Teats – newborn plus and number two teats
  • Bottle brush
  • Soothers – 0 – 3 month
  • Soother tree – handy if breastfeeding
  • Formula Dispenser
  • Baby monitor – digital with temp gauge (18c – 21c ideal temp)
  • Baby sling
  • Mobile or music for side of cot or crib (from 12 weeks onwards)
  • Window Blinds for car -2
  • Twisted Toy for car seat (from newborn)
  • Baby play gym – animal theme very colorful (from 6 weeks onwards)
  • Excellent present ideas here – interactive toys for babies / colorful hand toys / toys that attach to the buggy / soft books and teddies
  • Bouncing chair (from 2 or 3 weeks onwards)
  • Car seat plus base (suitable for baby until approx. 12 months or when their head is higher than the back of the seat)
  • Pram, buggy plus foot muff, umbrella and rain cover


It is advisable to purchase a tray (20) of the formula food plus teats in case of emergencies at home BEFORE you leave the hospital. They are very handy to have and save you having to sterilize bottles for the first few weeks.

If you plan on expressing after 2 or 3 weeks, the electric pump can be hired from Holles St. Enquire about this before you leave the hospital so that you know where to get it and how much it costs if needed.
